The poker game round

Dealer button
This round disc marked with the letter ”D” is often called “the button” and indicates who is the dealer. In a live game this would be the person who deals the cards, but on the internet, as well as in organized live games, there is a dedicated dealer and the player who would have been dealing the hand is instead represented by the dealer button. The button is moved clockwise around the table and follows the big blind.

Small blind
The next player clockwise after the dealer is forced to post half the minimum bet, called a “small blind”, before being dealt any cards. This rule is made to ensure action in the game and to prevent people from just sitting and waiting for premium hands before they enter a pot.

Big blind
The person to the left of the small blind also has to bet a forced bet before deciding if he/she should play the hand or not. This bet matches the minimum bet allowed in the first betting round and is called the “big blind”. After this bet, there are no more forced bets and all the following players must fold, call the big blind or raise.

First round
Each player will be dealt two cards face down. The action is started by the player to the left of the big blind, who has the option of folding, calling, or raising.

FOLD: Discard the hand.

CALL: Put in money or chips equal to an opponent's bet or raise.

RAISE: Bet an additional amount after someone else has bet.

End of first round
When the last bet/raise has been called by all the players or if everyone checks, the betting round is over.

At the end of each betting round all the money is placed in the pot.

The Flop
The first three community cards come here, these are known as “the flop”. The action for this round is started by the player to the left of the dealer (the player in the small blind position).

Note that your best hand is still a pair of Jacks (JJ872).

When the last bet/raise has been called by all the players or if everyone checks, this betting round is over.

There has been no betting before you, so you may check (call a bet of €0 - pass your turn) or bet.

At the end of each betting round all the money is placed in the pot.

The Turn
Now, there is one more community card dealt, known as “the turn”, and the action is initiated as on the flop.

You still hold a Pair of jacks (JJT87) but also picked up an inside straight draw (if a 9 comes on the next card, “the river”, you make a straight, seven to jack.)

You bet

At the end of each betting round all the money is placed in the pot.

The River
The final community card, known as “the river”, is dealt.

The river did not improve your hand, but note your opponents may hold a flush (anyone holding 2 spades will have a flush now).

Your hand is still a pair of Jacks (JJT87)

Peter raises

At the end of each betting round all the money is placed in the pot.

The Showdown
When the last betting round is over, it’s time for showdown.

The person who made the last bet/raise on the river is the person who shows his/her cards first. Then it continues clockwise and players who wish to claim the pot have to show their cards. If you can’t win the pot, and you don’t want the other players to know which cards you held when you were betting, then you are allowed to discard your cards (muck losing hands).

If no one made any bets on the river, the first person to show his/her cards is the player to the left of the dealer.

Peter wins! With flush.
